Basque Carvings Come to Life in Reno

This rubbing is simply titled, "Cowboy."

I had the pleasure of attending the opening reception last night for the new Basque Aspen Art Rubbings exhibit at the Nevada Historical Society in Reno. In the early to mid-1900s, male Basque sheepherders carved various figures and messages on aspen trees in groves all over Northern Nevada. Most notably the arborglyphs depicted the lives they left behind in France and Spain (the Pyrenees) before they immigrated to the U.S., animals such as deer and sheep, and the opposite sex.

This particular exhibit focuses on carvings that were found in Sierra Nevada groves and meadows by the husband-and-wife team of Phillip and Jean Earl. They began exploring these areas in 1969 and ultimately assembled a collection of more than 130 wax-on-muslin rubbings that preserved the carvings that would otherwise be lost over time due to environmental changes. The Earls have published their findings in a new book, Basque Aspen Art of the Sierra Nevada, published by Baobab Press.

The exhibit is located in the Historical Society's main hall that greets visitors as they walk inside the building located on the University of Nevada, Reno campus. Rubbings of cowboys, women, animals, moons, dates, and an actual carving preserved on an aspen stump are just a few of the items you'll see at the new exhibit, on display until April 14. The image below, taken at the Historical Society, explains the exhibit in more detail. The building also contains a gift shop, library, and museum and is open Wednesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library hours are noon to 4 p.m. on those same days.

Inaugural Mesquite Hot Air Balloon Festival

Southern Nevadans will get the chance to enjoy the majestic world of hot-air balloons January 28-29, during the inaugural Mesquite Hot Air Balloon Festival.

Spearheaded by balloon meister Gayle McCoy of Elko, the event is expected to draw about 20 pilots. A 22-year resident of the city in northeastern Nevada, McCoy literally eats, sleeps, and breaths the world of hot air balloons.

The energetic McCoy is enthusiastic about hot-air balloon festivals. Self-proclaimed as a “utility guy” at Barrick Bald Mountains gold mine in Elko, he is certain that this will become one of the city’s favorite events.

“It’s a passion for me,” says McCoy, adding that a long-running hot-air balloon festival in North Las Vegas ceased about six to seven years ago. “I think people are going to remember this one in Mesquite for years to come.”

Contestants include eight from Nevada, nine from Utah, two from California, and one from Arizona.

All festival events will be held at the CasaBlanca Resort or the CasaBlanca Golf Course. An in-depth schedule of events includes an assortment of gatherings. Balloons will launch each day beginning at about 6:30 a.m. from the golf course.

In the afternoon, tethered rides will be available beginning at 3 p.m. at the CasaBlanca Resort parking lot, weather permitting. Equally as entertaining will be a balloon glow on the grounds of the CasaBlanca Resort on the evening of the 28th. An awards presentation at 10 a.m. on the 29th will wrap up festivities at the CasaBlanca Golf Club.

Corley Ranch Hosts October Harvest Festival

For those of you with kids, you already know that October is an exciting month. The anticipation of dressing up to score a bag full of candy late at night while pretending to be your favorite villain or superhero is enough to make little ones shake and shimmy with enthusiasm. Lucky for you, though, there’s more than just sugar to peak the interest of little goblins in magical Carson Valley.

The Corley Ranch Harvest Festival, in particular, is a great way to spend any one of your weekends throughout October. 2011 marks the seventh annual celebration every Saturday and Sunday in October from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission ($6 for adults; kids age 3-17 and seniors pay $5 each; kids 2 and under are free!) includes live entertainment, a petting zoo, Kiddie Land, bounce house for kids 5 and under, photo opportunities, a pumpkin patch, pig races, and a two-acre corn maze. If you’ve yet to venture South of Gardnerville on Hwy 395, and are wondering what to do with the kids this weekend, The Corley Ranch Harvest Festival is sure to delight. With enough activities to keep them busy the entire afternoon you need not make additional plans. Golden Nugget Announces WNFR Headliners

Golden Nugget Las Vegas now has tickets on sale for some of the top names in country music during the 2011 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, December 1-10.

Henderson's Shakespeare in the Park

The City of Henderson will celebrate a huge milestone this October, commemorating the 25th anniversary of its most treasured event, Shakespeare in the Park, by featuring the play that started it all – "A Midsummer Night’s Dream," performed by the Las Vegas Shakespeare Company. This will be the third presentation of the popular romantic comedy in the history of Shakespeare in the Park.

Searching for unique ideas to cultivate and nurture the performing, as well as the cultural arts locally, the Green Valley Arts Council partnered with the City of Henderson in the late '80s to create the Elizabethan-inspired outdoor performance series. Over the course of 25 years, Shakespeare in the Park has evolved tremendously. What once began as a vision to strengthen arts programming in the community has transformed into one of the most successful, longest-running annual events offered in Henderson.

"Romeo & Juliet," Masquerade

To date, the theatrical festival has been enjoyed by over 265,000 devoted fans. It also has featured over 15 of the Bard’s legendary works, from "Romeo & Juliet" to "Macbeth" and "The Taming of the Shrew," and has appeared at a variety of venues including the Henderson Pavilion, Henderson Events Plaza, Wildhorse Golf Club and Foxridge Park.

The fall tradition will feature a modern twist. Introduced in 2010, this year’s Shakespeare in the Park will, once again, include a traveling tour, a fairly recent departure from the series’ original format, which included one weekend of multiple shows. Residents will have four opportunities to see the Las Vegas Shakespeare Company perform "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" in a park close to their neighborhood.

Shakespeare in the Park kicks off Saturday, October 1 at Sonata Park, 1550 Seven Hills Drive, with the remaining shows scheduled for Saturday, October 8 at Discovery Park, 2011 Paseo Verde Parkway; Saturday, October 15 at Lake Las Vegas, 15 Costa di Lago; and concluding at River Mountain Park, 1941 Appaloosa Drive, on Saturday, October 22. All performances will be at 7 p.m. with a green show occurring one hour prior to each presentation. Admission is complimentary.

LAUGHLIN, NEVADA'S PIRATES OF THE COLORADO RIVER REGATTA

Shiver Me Timbers!!!!! Thousands of pirates are expected to invade the Colorado River for this 5th annual wet and wild event.

Locals and visitors alike are encouraged to put together pirate-themed floats and join this jolly extravaganza. The regatta welcomes fun-loving, outdoor enthusiasts to ride on adorned inner tubes; decked-out kayaks and canoes; and decorative, non-motorized parade-type floats for a colorful race down the Colorado River.

This year, the festivities will last for three days beginning with the "Wake the Plank" wake boarding and wake skate competition on Thursday, 8/11. More fun, frolic and partying starts the Friday night before the float with the Ye Gotta Regatta pre-party at Community Park. And, to wrap up this fun-filled weekend, everyone can join in the post-float celebration at the Ya Hafta Afta post-party in Rotary Park.

There will also be a Cannonball Regatta Pre-Party, sponsored by a local Kiwanis group, at Davis Camp on Friday evening from 5 to 9 pm. Fun activities will include a Beer Pong Tournament, Outdoor Nightclub and Foam Party, and the Pirate Obstacle Course.

The Regatta Registration includes an event wristband for entry into the parks, shuttle bus rides and food, commemorative t-shirt, and a 2011 Regatta Discount Card good for discounts at local businesses all year long! Floaters without event wristbands will have to provide their own transportation to/from launch site to Rotary Park.

Greg London was born in Northern California to an English mother and an American father. They moved to England when Greg was a young boy where he went to school, but they continued to travel back and forth from England to California. As a child he played trumpet in his grandfather's band and also played first chair trumpet in the California Youth Symphony. He taught himself to play several musical instruments and performs the trumpet, guitar, piano, harmonica, and percussion instruments in his shows. He performed in community theatre and musical comedy in England and America starting as a child in Windsor until his early 20s in San Francisco, where he starred opposite the stage legend Chita Rivera.

At the age of 24, during a James Bond 007 replacement, Greg had such a strong desire to be the next James Bond he begged his agent to arrange an audition, but to no avail, so he flew to London on his own to meet with the producer of the film. He appears in the 2007 movie release The Dukes. In 1984 he formed a band, playing many hundreds of dates in clubs all over California, Nevada, Arizona and Colorado. He began developing his singing voice and was discovered in Pebble Beach, California by a General Electric executive, which led to engagements to perform for many and varied corporate events. By the early 1990s Greg had become one of America's top corporate entertainers. Talented at impressions and comedy, as well as having an incredible voice, Greg developed The Greg Show a musical impressions-based comedic show. In 2001 Greg was presented with the Spotlight Award, 'Entertainer of the Year' for his performances in the corporate world. Having performed in a headline showroom in Las Vegas he developed the ability to create a theatrical production incorporating all of his talents. And now starring in IMPRESSIONS THAT ROCK in Las Vegas at the Hilton, Greg is fulfilling his childhood dream to headline his own show in Las Vegas.

Sandy Hackett's Rat Pack Show

Elvis Presley would have turned 75 years old on January 8, 2011 and the Carson Valley Inn is marking this milestone with a special Elvis Week celebration, January 3-8. Highlights include Elvis impersonators in the casino and Cabaret Lounge, teddy bear and Elvis memorabilia giveaways on January 3, cake and champagne on January 8 and some of Elvis' favorite food combinations served as specials in Katie's all week.

The teddy bear giveaway will kick off the celebration on January 3 when every INN Club member earning 125 points or more that day will receive a free singing teddy bear while they last — plus you keep the points! Las Vegas Rocks Cafe

The Neonopolis has awakened again. The space formerly known as Jillian’s has a new tenant and a great new theme after a sleek renovation. The Las Vegas Rocks Cafe, co-owned by TV host Tony Sacca and chef Josette Leblond (known for Josette’s Bistro in Las Vegas), have teamed up with a new concept. Opening in December 2009, the pair has partnered with all their experience in food and entertainment to revitalize the Fremont Street Experience area.

The menu consists of themed foods such as The Siegfried and Roy turkey, ham, Swiss cheese sandwich; the Elvis Delight grilled banana and peanut-butter sandwich; The Ratpack Antipasto; and the Charo Chili. For entrees, The Sammy Steak, a big rib-eye; The Topless Dancer, an open-faced turkey breast; the Cirque Du Sole Filet; and topping off the desert menu, The Glitter Gulch Crème Brule and The Sin City Dessert.

The 20,000-square-foot venue, which has hosted such stars as Terry Fator and Louis Prima, this can hold up to 3,000 people in a standing room concert area.

Sacca has been doing his television show, “Entertainment Las Vegas Style,” for 24 years. He wrote the song “Las Vegas Rocks” four years ago and began marketing his musical clock and a line of souvenirs. He has produced, hosted, and researched Las Vegas history for his TV show and has developed a library of photos and catalogs with more than 500 celebrities and entertainers. With videos running in the restaurant on numerous TV screens, you can immerse yourself in fascinating history as you watch the crowd strolling by on Fremont Street.

Leblond has owned bakeries in Las Vegas and Los Angeles for years, and her Josette’s Bistro has been a mainstay on West Flamingo Road. She has had her own cooking show for the last couple of years.

CSI: The Experience

Have you sat glued to the set watching CSI for years? Have you wanted to be there with actor Gil Grissom and his team? Have you wanted to take classes in forensics?

Well, now you can do it all. Debuting last year at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, CSI: The Experience is there for all who want to see, feel, hear, smell, and solve. Entering a Briefing Theater to orientate the novice, and give you instructions, Grissom steps out from behind his desk. He says, "Keep an open mind," and you start your journey through one of three crime scenes.

In "A House Collided," a car has run into the living-room window. In the driver's seat is a man slumped over. The windshield is shattered, and the door is shut. Inside the room there are muddy shoeprints, drops of blood, and a stain near the sofa.

In "Who Got Served?" a woman has been found dead in an alley behind a Las Vegas motel, in the seedier part of town. By the dumpster, she is wearing a waitress uniform. There is a tire tread across her abdomen.

In "No Bones About It!" a hiker has found a human skull in the middle of the desert. Partially buried by silt and debris, the bones are scattered. There is a visible hole in the scull.

You exit and head into a huge room of crime scene photos and clues. With drawings of your investigation in front of you, you go from checking fibers, blood samples, insects, photos, dental records, and missing-persons reports. Through science and deduction of the clues, you continue, seeing fragments of possible clues.

With DNA samples from the victims, you analyze the cause of death. Natural, homicide, suicide? Can you crack the case? With the newest scientific means to solve your crime, you submit your final analysis to the FBI for positive identification.

The attraction is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. with last admission at 8:30 p.m.

Free Fishing Day Events Statewide

If you have been trying to figure out a way to get the kids off the computer and out of the house, then the Nevada Department of Wildlife has a plan, and here’s the best part...it’s free.

Nevada Free Fishing Day is Saturday, June 12. Anglers may fish in any public fishing water in the state without needing a fishing license or trout stamp. All limits and other regulations apply. “Free Fishing Day provides the perfect opportunity for families to spend the day together in an activity they may have never tried before,” says Chris Vasey, Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) Regional Outdoor Education Coordinator. He adds that NDOW has stocked fish in many of Nevada’s waters in preparation for Saturday. “Your chances should be pretty good for catching a fish,” he said.

This year NDOW is helping to put on several events around the state from Las Vegas to Ely to Sparks. Many of the events include prizes and free goodies for the kids.

Even if you don’t plan on attending any of the scheduled events, NDOW wants to remind everyone that Free Fishing Day is statewide and for anglers of all ages. “People are allowed to fish in any public fishing water in the state without needing a fishing license or trout stamp,” Vasey says. “We want people to get out there and check out what Nevada has to offer, and maybe if you like what you see, you will think about buying a license for the year or a short term permit.”

An annual fishing license in Nevada costs $29, $13 for a junior (12-15 years of age) or a senior (65 years of age or older) fishing license, and $9 for as short term fishing permit. Fishing licenses are available online at www.ndow.org. Here is a list of the events being offered around the state:

SOUTHERN REGION

Las Vegas - This year’s Free Fishing Day event for the Las Vegas Valley will be held at the Boulder City Pond in the Veterans’ Memorial Park, Boulder City. Registration will start at 7:30 a.m. and the event will kick off at 8 a.m. and conclude at 11 a.m. The first 300 kids will receive a goody bag with a tackle box. Prizes will be given out throughout the event for all ages. This event is being sponsored by a partnership between NDOW, Boulder City Parks and Recreation, National Park Service, Bureau of Reclamation, and the Public Lands Institute. There will also be informational booths on fishing activities, such as casting, fish identification, baits and lures, etc. along with booths on desert wildlife, boating safety, fish art, and much more. Pioche - Echo Canyon State Park will be holding a Free Fishing Day Derby from 8 a.m. to noon. Rangers at the park have a reputation for putting on a great event complete with prizes, raffles, food and other options. Echo Canyon is located just east of Pioche in Lincoln County. EASTERN REGION

Elko/Carlin - NDOW will be holding a non-competitive Kids Fishing Derby at the Chinese Garden Nature Study Area Pond in Carlin from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 am. Registration will start at 8 a.m., with the first 50 anglers to register receiving a free T-shirt. The derby is for children 16 and under, but everyone is welcome to come out and fish that day. The event is sponsored by NDOW, the City of Carlin and the Ruby Mountain Chapter of Safari Club International. NDOW will have limited rods and reels available for new anglers to borrow as well as angler education volunteers to help you rig your outfits and give you fishing tips. There will also be a fly tying booth with members of the Ruby Mountain Flycasters showing young anglers how to tie flies and give them a chance to tie their own wooly bugger. There will be a free drawing for prizes for all the children who sign up for the derby between 11:30 a.m. and noon. Prizes include rod and reel combos, fly fishing outfits, and tackle boxes. Children must be 16 or under to be eligible for the prizes.

Ely - NDOW will host the annual Kid’s Free Fishing Day Derby at Cave Lake State Park. Registration starts at 8 a.m. and the kids fishing derby runs from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. There is no charge for the participants, though parents must be present with their children. Between 11:30 a.m. and noon, there will be a free drawing for prizes for children who sign up for the derby. Prizes include rod and reel combos, fly fishing outfits, and tackle boxes. There will also be free grab bags for all participants. Children must be under 18 to be eligible for the prizes.

WESTERN REGION

Sparks/Reno - Once again The Sparks Rotary Club, NDOW and the City of Sparks Parks and Recreation Department have joined forces to offer a special community event for the area’s children. Kids will enjoy a fun-filled morning of fishing (see photo) along the south shore of the Sparks Marina from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Commemorative t-shirts and fishing poles will be distributed at the registration area until supplies run out. There will be fun games and face painting for all ages, and a free barbecue lunch will begin at 9 a.m. with hot dogs, soda and ice cream for registered children. In addition to the Sparks Rotary Club, NDOW and the City of Sparks Parks and Recreation, many generous sponsors enable this free event to take place. Nevada Bighorns Unlimited, Safari Club International and the Reno Rodeo Foundation are providing generous cash donations. Mark Fore and Strike Sporting Goods and Model Dairy have been sponsors since the event began, and are returning again with in-kind donations. Other generous sponsors, as well as information on the event can be found by clicking “latest news” on the Sparks Rotary Club’s website at www.sparksrotary.org. Rotary members from Sparks and Reno, and staff from the Nevada Department of Wildlife will be on hand to assist those with little or no fishing experience. McKeen Motor Car Celebration

Carson City always offers a great selection of family activities, and this past Mother’s Day was no exception. After its decade-long restoration and on the 100-year anniversary of its arrival in Carson City, rides on the historic McKeen Motor Car No. 22 (click on link to see photos of the car) were made public on May 9, 2010. Railroad fanatics of all ages, as well as donors who made the McKeen restoration possible, turned out to celebrate this grand event.

Friends of the Nevada State Railroad Museum turned out in record numbers dressed in period costumes and brought history to life as they told how the restoration process unfolded over the years. Some folks who rode the McKeen Car when it was in service (1910-45) on the Virginia & Truckee Railroad attended the event.

The restoration of the car was beautifully done, and the conductor on board supplied great info during a discussion with our party. We discussed windows, floorboards, light fixtures, and even the artistic scroll work on the ceiling of the car, a surprise that was found during removal of the panels in the restoration process (see interior photo below).

Not to be forgotten, the museum was a hit with adults and children. A museum store, old locomotives, tools of the trade, and photos provide a wealth of knowledge to anyone interested in learning. A to-scale (1/87th actual size) working model railroad is operated by volunteers on weekends and group-tour days. At all other times a push-button enables visitors to operate a train on demand. In addition, there are toy train tables and an engine car exhibit with knobs and levers for kids to operate. After riding on the train and seeing all the old equipment, this is a perfect way for any child to end the afternoon.

X Burlesque

To describe X Burlesque at Flamingo Las Vegas as “hot” would be the understatement of a lifetime, something akin to calling Mt. Everest simply “tall” or the universe “big.” Sure, it gets the point across, but fails to convey the white-hot sexiness of X Burlesque.

The intimate 180-seat Bugsy’s Cabaret ensures that every seat is tantalizingly close to the six gorgeous X Girls who make frequent trips into the audience and to the mid-theater vertical dancing apparatus, better known as a stripper pole. Newer pop music is combined with rock and country favorites, each song drawing on the individual talents of each dancer. Two stage-adjacent screens interact with the show and introduce each vignette.

A striptease to Aerosmith’s “Pink” is both seductive and playful, and boots are the last thing on anyone’s mind during the country-western medley set to Jessica Simpson’s cover of “Boots.”

Mid-show comics like Nancy Ryan and James Bean entertain with adult humor and allow the audience to catch their breath before the next heart-pounding experience.

The girls entertain nightly at 10 p.m.

Cirque du Soleil’s Viva ELVIS

“All Shook Up” would be a good way to describe my coworker, Nevada Magazine Editor Matthew B. Brown, and me as we exited Aria Las Vegas following the world premiere of Cirque du Soleil’s latest production, “Viva ELVIS,” on February 19. The high-energy homage to the King of rock ’n’ roll could get a corpse snapping its fingers and tapping its feet.

That’s obviously something of an overstatement, but you get the idea. “Viva ELVIS” pairs some of Presley’s best-loved songs—about 30 in all—with the out-of-this-world, superhuman acrobatics of Cirque du Soleil in a tribute worthy of the King. The fast-paced, playful performance watches more like a variety show than a traditional Cirque production such as “O” at Bellagio or “Ká” at MGM Grand.

A jailbreak set, built for gymnastic and acrobatic antics, sets the stage for “Jailhouse Rock,” a military-themed jungle gym provides a playground for the troupe during “Heartbreak Hotel,” a massive, seven trampoline set accommodates the high-flying tricks of “Got a Lot of Love,” and “Viva Las Vegas” is accompanied by what else but showgirls and feathers. A handful of songs, such as “Love Me Tender” and “Can’t Help Falling in Love” are accompanied by more somber, emotional performances.

While some critics have noted the show’s perhaps too-cheery tone—if “Viva ELVIS” claimed to be a biographical portrayal of Elvis’ life, I would agree, it is, however, a tribute—one thing is certain, “Viva ELVIS” has the strength and energy to please Elvis enthusiasts from the mildly interested to the raving fanatic.

Brinkley defeats Stevens by unanimous decision

I have to admit I was rather skeptical of "big-time boxing" in Reno, especially when one of the boxing capitals of the world is some 450 miles to the south. But the fact that this was my first live boxing event made those doubts somewhat irrelevant.

As it turned out, I couldn't have been more wrong. I could feel the buzz as soon as I entered Grand Sierra Resort, and the main event delivered with drama, energy, and flair—and left the hometown crowd satisfied.

The ESPN2-televised event on January 29, hosted in conjunction with Star Boxing and Let's Get It On Promotions, included six matches. The marquee bout featured super middleweights Curtis "Showtime" Stevens, from Brooklyn, and Jesse Brinkley, from Yerington, about an 80-mile drive southeast of Reno.

Stevens got to Brinkley in the first round with a few big punches—Brinkley's eye was black, it seemed, before the crowd got settled in their seats. But the Nevada native forced Stevens into two 10 counts, one early and one late, and used a persistent jab to wear Stevens down and win by unanimous decision. The judges rewarded Brinkley's impressive 12th round with scores of 117-109, 118-108, and 119-107. Brinkley improved to 35-5, while Stevens fell to 21-3.

There was a group of Stevens supporters close to where I was sitting who tried to motivate their boxer throughout, but the majority of the crowd was for Brinkley. It was a tremendously entertaining fight from beginning to end, but the fact that the hometown guy won added a nice heroic element to the affair.

According to the Reno Gazette-Journal, Brinkley will be the No. 2-ranked fighter in the IBF and is expected to take on champion Lucien Bute in April. Promoter Terry Lane says negotiations are underway for a bout April 17 in Canada (check out the RGJ article, link above, for results from the other matches).

As I watched the fights, I couldn't help but think back to Nevada's storied boxing history, including the famous Jack Johnson-Jim Jeffries fight of 1910. Laura Jackson Adds Spunk to the Reno Philarmonic

I had the pleasure of attending Reno Philharmonic's "Latin Temptation" at Reno's Pioneer Center last night. I had seen one prior show—a cowboy poetry and music performance—at Pioneer Center, but this was completely different in almost every aspect.

The Reno Philharmonic, led this season by music director and conductor Laura Jackson, performs regularly at the venue. Jackson spoke before the show to members of the Reno-Tahoe Young Professionals Network and said, "This is where I want to be." Her flamboyancy and energy during the performance backed that statement up. You can tell Jackson enjoys what she does, and her stage presence alone makes it worth seeing one of the Phil's remaining shows.

Although I don't consider myself a classical music buff, I was thoroughly entertained, especially by the opening act, which featured selections from Georges Bizet's Carmen. Click here for a sampling.

Event though the pace was a little slow at times for my taste, accordion extraordinaire Peter Soave put on an amazing show playing to the music of Astor Piazolla. The night ended with a tribute to Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. Apparently, Jackson has a sense of humor as well. After intermission, she said to the crowd, "I wonder how many of you have been to a Latin show where two-thirds of the music is French."

Hey, it was an entertaining two hours, and that's all that matters.

Holly Gives Back for the Holidays

The holidays in Las Vegas are usually a bit different than they are in the rest of the nation. There’s no escaping the city’s sexy attitude and the party-all-night lifestyle. It doesn’t exactly match with the innocent imagery of holiday family dinners and animated children’s specials. But that doesn’t mean it’s only about Las Vegas nightclubs and parties during the holidays. There are plenty of charitable events like the Great Santa Run and the Magical Forest, but sometimes you need a global face to get global attention for a great cause, and no starlet represents Vegas as much as Holly Madison does!

She went from Girl Next Door to Las Vegas’ sweetheart, and Holly’s got her schedule full with store openings and hosting opportunities, but that doesn’t mean she won’t take time out to help the needy. The star of the burlesque revue, "Peepshow," Holly will soon be seen on E!’s "Holly’s World," where she will showcase the best of Sin City for the whole world to see on Sunday nights. She’s hoping it will boost the Vegas economy and encourage tourists to come. But before the premiere, she’s been working hard to help the less fortunate.

Over the Thanksgiving break, she teamed up with Playboy Playmate Laura Croft and Jersey Boys’ Rick Faugno to help serve meals to at-risk kids at the Le Cordon Bleu’s student run Café Bleu. Now for the Christmas holiday, Holly started her own toy drive with the Salvation Army and Toys for Tots. Holly Joy Christmas Toy Drive will be accepting new, unwrapped toys of $10 and above at various radio stations across the Las Vegas area. Holly and the organizations are hoping for a goal of 1000 toys, but plan on topping whatever they reach this year with next year’s drive. This is a great way for Las Vegans to pitch in this holiday season and maybe get to catch a glimpse of Holly in person as she promotes her charity. New CityCenter an Architectural Wonder

Despite the economy, Las Vegas is about to experience a huge tourism boost thanks to the latest addition to the Strip: CityCenter. This enormous complex looks like something straight out of a sci-fi movie. The entire center took over 9,000 construction workers and 8 world-renowned architects to construct it. People are already claiming this will be an architectural wonder similar to famous structures like the Guggenheim in Spain and other breathtaking buildings in locations like London and Hong Kong—except this one belongs to the people of Sin City!

Spanning more than 80 acres, the CityCenter features dining, nightlife and accommodations to suit all sorts of Las Vegas travelers. The ARIA Resort and Casino will join the lineup of Las Vegas hotels once the establishment opens. The theatre at the hotel, simply called the ARIA Theatre, will be the host of Cirque du Soleil’s latest show Viva Elvis!, which will celebrate the life of the King of Rock and Roll. Viva Elvis! is the latest addition to the incredible Cirque du Soleil shows here in Las Vegas, and one that is sure to be as popular as it will be unique.

On the dining forefront, CityCenter will feature celebrity restaurants from Eva Longoria (Beso) and Todd English (The Pub) along with a tree house-style restaurant by Wolfgang Puck. Most of these restaurants will feature patio seating in order to get a view of the Las Vegas streets below. Due to the massive size of the CityCenter, you can plan to see the appearance of the Las Vegas skyline changed forever, but it will only bring more jobs and more entertainment to Sin City so it can shine on. A tram will be connecting the CityCenter from both The Bellagio and The Monte Carlo hotels, providing easier access to the magnificent building which is both modern and environmentally-friendly.

As for the shopping in CityCenter, it is already being called the largest world retail district. The complex has yet to open so only a few choice details have been revealed, but we’re sure this location will offer entertainment options like no other Las Vegas establishment has before. Broadway Comes to Reno

For the last 15 years, The Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts has brought some of Broadway's most loved musicals to Reno. Last Friday, November 6, the 15th season of the Pioneer Center's Broadway Comes to Reno opened with a three-day, five-show performance of the Andrew Lloyd Webber classic, "Cats." To celebrate my mother's birthday, my brother, sister, and I took her to the opening performance of the play she had not seen in more than 20 years.

Not your typical point-to-point storyline, "Cats" is based on the 1939 collection of whimsical poems, Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, by T.S. Eliot. Through the loose story, the audience is introduced to various Jellicle Cats and their individual quirks and eccentricities. Characters include the incorrigible Run Tum Tugger, wise Old Deuteronomy, the trouble making Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer, and of course, the most clever and cunning, Mr. Mistoffelees.

Exceptional dancing and singing defined the performance, and tasteful special effects were a nice surprise. The standout performance was, with little surprise, the ubiquitous "Memory" by the outcast, former glamour cat, Grizabella.

While Sunday, November 8 was the last day of "Cats" in Reno, Pioneer's Broadway season features five more musicals: "The Wedding Singer," January 15-17; "Avenue Q," February 26-28; "The Drowsy Chaperone," March 26-28; "Stomp," April 16-18; and "The Wizard of Oz, May 14-16.

Sneak Peek: Vegas 2010

If you’re planning on coming to Las Vegas next year, you will have incredible entertainment options to choose from. As 2009 approaches its final months, the news regarding Sin City’s latest shows continues to roll in.

Earlier this year we learned the big news that Celine Dion would be returning to The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. According to Canada’s sweetheart, she wanted to kick off 2010 right by returning to Las Vegas with a brand new show. She’s been hailed as the biggest draw since Frank Sinatra, and when Elton John performed at the famous Colosseum venue he reportedly referred to the hall as Celine’s Palace.

While Celine returns to her palace with her ballads, a country crooner is coming out of retirement to take his Stetson to the Wynn Las Vegas. Garth Brooks will be headlining his own show at The Wynn’s Encore Theatre. Considering Brooks hasn’t performed a major show in eight years, the official announcement generated a huge buzz amongst country music fans. He’s sold 128 million albums, second to The Beatles here in the U.S., so you can expect all of the 1,500 seats in the Encore to sell out quickly. Other performers getting their own resident show include the legendary Tony Bennett, who will be taking Barry Manilow’s place at the Las Vegas Hilton.

Let’s not forget Las Vegas always has the best of Cirque du Soleil’s performances. Along with smash hits like O, KA, and Zumanity, there will soon be an Elvis show put on by the amazing Cirque du Soleil team. The show will celebrate the life and music of Elvis and avoid the controversy that surrounded the later years of his life. While the show is unofficially titled "Elvis," an official title is expected to be announced later this year. We do know the show will take place at the ARIA Theatre in the ARIA Resort and Casino at the CityCenter, and it has been approved by the Presley family. Cirque du Soleil is using remastered Elvis hits instead of a live singer to make the performance spectacular. It’s sure to be another great hit from the Cirque du Soleil troupe.
